VSAT
VSAT Introduction
A VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal), is a 2-way ground station for use with a satellite with a dish antenna that is less than 3m (most VSAT antennas range from just 75 cm to 1.2 meters). Data rates for VSAT range from narrowband (opposite of broadband) up to 4 Megabits per second.
VSAT's talk to satellites holding a stationary orbit to transmit data from small remote earth station terminals to other stations in mesh configurations. Or they can talk to master earth station hubs in star configurations.
VSAT Technology
Improvements in technology and electronics have greatly improved the price of Fixed Service Satellite (FSS) over the past several years. Newer VSAT offerings are coming online which use Ka band that promises higher throughput rates for a lower total cost.
VSATs are most commonly used to transmit narrowband data such as point of sale transactions including credit card, polling or RFID data; or broadband data for the provision of Internet service to remote locations, voice over IP (VOIP) or TV/video. VSAT's can also be used for mobile phased-array antennas or maritime such as Eutelsat or Vizada communication.
