Any other similar applications
As good as Mappoint is I am finding it very restrictive when trying to obtain the output that I require.

Can anyone suggest any other applications that will do what mappoint does but allow more editing of the map such as placename removal?

use full-blown GIS
use a full-blown GIS such as ESRI ArcView (and al.) = expensive
or smaller GIS tools such as Manifold
If you prefer free tools, use GRASS
