Beginner stuck-what am I doing wrong?

I am usisng Mappoint 2010. What I want to do is show Hillsborough county, Fl with all its zipcodes as the background to my excel data which has addresses in the county. I want the outline of the zip codes to show with the number of the zipcode visible as background.

I'm getting an error message and being a beginner at this, don't know what I'm doing wrong. I am going into data, territories, create from your own set of data, import your source file. My source file is set up--country, state, county, zip code (only Hillsborough), territory (name of city which in many cases is the same). I actually don't need the city names but I tried running with the zip code column identified as territory and that didn't work. What am I doing wrong? My guess is that it is something simple.

What I want to accomplish once I create the map is to import excel data that has addresses and will be in two colors of push pins for the first version. The second versions would use the same data and separate out addresses that fall in Tampa and those that fall in the county but not city limits. The third version would have 10 different groups identified and each of those groups would have two shapes-one standard push pin and one a different symbol.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong and I'm on deadline with this project. Is there an automatic option to create a map of a county with all its zipcodes? Am I missing something here? My sense is that I've done some little thing wrong but can't figure it out.

    I'd appreciate anyone's help.

Re: Beginner stuck-what am I doing wrong?

There are a couple different things you might do without importing anything, let me prepare and post some maps/screenshots in MapPoint 2010 format, see if either of these help, and we'll go from there, OK?

BTW, what company or organization are you doing this for and what is the purpose? Would it make a good article?

    Thanks,
    Eric

Here's the first one using the Map Settings options. Note that this was just added in MapPoint 2010, so users of MapPoint 2009 or earlier would not have these settings options.

I set the map style to Data map to make it less cluttered, and also turned off the Town/Other Places. Then I just checked the Postal Code so that More Detail shows up for these.

    Does this help?

Here's the second one, I'm not sure this is much different however, maybe just another way to achieve the same thing.

    territory.jpg

If you go to Territories, Create Manually, and choose Zip Code, it gives you this map. This is a little more difficult to work with however, as soon as you switch away from the Territory Pane, it goes away.

Anyway, let me know if we are getting somewhere and what needs to be done next.

Neither of those gives me what I want. I only want to see Hillsborough County zip codes on the map. Both maps give a huge area in Florida. I want only Hillsborough zip codes up on the screen. I have a list of those.

Re: Beginner stuck-what am I doing wrong?

Eric, the data I'm trying to show contrasts coming foreclosures against foreclosures that have already occurred. My findings are of great significance. The maps you posed, although they show zip codes, which is what I want, show a huge area of Florida. Clearwater is another major city across the bay in the Tampa area, etc. I only want Hillsborough County on my map and just like you'd look at a map of the United States and see the outline of the states, say Pennsylvania, and that name would be within the outline, I want to only see Hillsborough county with the zipcodes that belong to Hillsborough.

    Got it.

If you look at the rectangular-ish boundary on the edges of the map, that is actually the Hillsborough County boundary.

Do you want to post the zip codes you are interested in? Then we could zoom in on that.

In any case, could you re-create the map using the instructions I posted and then just zoom in on the area you want?

Eric, your 704 attachment is closer to what I'm trying to do especially since I must be able to zoom in and out. However, would you please list the steps that you followed. Is it possible that you are using 2011 and I'm on 2010? I'm having trouble figuring out how you created the map. Sorry, raw beginner and I had a mapping expert working with me but we only had access to freebies ( he told me this wouldn't work) and the graphics were awful. So please, step by step how did you do this?

Click on the Map Settings button, it is just to the left of the steering wheel.

This will bring up the pane you see on the left side in this screenshot.

    http://www.mapforums.com/attachments...p_settings.jpg

Then just make the three settings changes you see in the screenshot with the green arrows.

Finally, zoom into the area you want.

Hope this helps! If you need some one on one help or training via something like WebEx or shared desktop, I can also help, contact me via PM or e-mail training - AT - mp2kmag.com

Re: Beginner stuck-what am I doing wrong?

I've got it. I didn't even know about that button. Is there a tutorial that can help? I looked thru the help index.

I made a change to what you told me because I wanted streets and highways to show so I checked those. But the data is going on the map. I'm getting a lot of rejects of street data though over stuff like E or W and I haven't figured out how to resolve that accurately.

the visual for what I'm working with is quite interesting to see mapped. I'll have to doublecheck my data though on some of the stuff.
