Imac g3 help

I have i old imac g3 and it hase a new hard drive but when i try to boot of a disk it wownt work i held down the C key and it still didnet work but if i try mac os x panther it boots off that but i calnt install it because the firmware needs updating. and because it is a new hard drive i calnt install the firmware because there is no os installed
