I love playing with maps. I will attempt to share what I learn and the new things that I am doing with GIS systems

Hello, Virtual Earth

I really never even looked at this new product until I saw a posting about it in the Microsoft Newsgroup for MapPoint.
I had to go try it.... I'm hooked now.

First thing I had to do was play with the excellent SDK over at MSDN, just so I could get out of the box and get a feel for the power. Being web based, I saw new oppurtunities with being able to be scripted.

After the initial play with stuff, I went out to see if my old friend the Aloha DLL would be nice. I was wrong- the libraries would need to be recompiled for me to use them with the MS Net Framework. Not my idea of fun- so I will see if I can try something new.

I resurected my relationship with the Emergency Response Guide, which does provide initial areas of concern for chemicals. Now, I am exploring recreating the offsets of the standard circle plot to reflect the weather.

It is then that I realized that with VE, the Aloha backbone will be a crutch even if I could harness it. The reason is that we can do 3D visuals, but the Aloha footprints are only 2D.

At this point, I am optimistic that I will have at least a 2D implementation within a week or so. The 3D will be a lot more complicated as there is a lot more variables involved. Maybe the gov't can create a more modern version of the Aloha libraries.
