Here's a Boundary Example from the dev version of MPSuperShape. This should be released soon, but I am looking for beta testers in the next few days.

Both shapes were drawn automatically by MPSuperShape. The first (the black one) is a boundary on the red flag pushpins. The red shape is the same, but extended by 50 miles.
This extension is for the edges, hence the "pointy end" in the east extends further.

Pushpins can be selected as All Pushpins, a specific Pushpin Set, or with a selected area.

MPMileage v1.1 released + more shape functionality being added to MPSuperShape

I released v1.1 of MPMileage on Monday. This fixes a number of MapPoint restart problems, gives improved progress statistics, and adds a feature that allows you to select the database rows to process. This avoids the re-computation of routes that were successfully processed during a previous run.

I'm also working on a new version MPSuperShape. I have already improved the KML support, but I am also writing a new shape function that creates a convex "boundary shape" that surrounds a group of pushpins. This boundary shape could be used territories, classifications, etc.

I will be starting beta testing of this new feature in the next few days, so if you are interested, send me a PM with details of what you intend to use it for, etc.

Do you have a need to classify some pushpins?

I'm looking to writing another article (possibly a two parter) for Eric. Second half will "do something useful". I'm playing with a few ideas, but a program that worked its way through an imported pushpin set and changed pushpin symbols according to imported data fields would be a natural choice - especially if the classification rules were quite complicated.

Do you have some data that you think might be suitable? Let me know!

I've just released a new product, MPMileage:

MPMileage: Batch calculate mileages with Microsoft MapPoint

MPMileage is a batch route mileage computation tool. Yes that is similar to MileCharter, but whilst MileCharter computes mileage tables and "find closest" calculations, MPMileage computes point-to-point route listings. These can be listed in Access or Excel (other databases will probably be added in the future). Results are written to the database. MPMileage also works as a standalone application that runs MapPoint inthe background. This allows multiple MapPoints to be used simultaneously on a modern multi-core PC, resulting in greatly enhanced processing speeds.

As usual, there's a free 14 day trial. Download it now, and give it a go!

"Executive Summary": New look to the menus, some usability improvements, but the 300+ pushpins have been replaced with 40 or so different ones. The new pins have less color selection, as well as less shape variations. Also all the numbers/etc have gone.

Addins and other products designed for MapPoint 2006 are generally working first time with MapPoint 2009.

A Busy Week

It has been a busy week. A new version of RouteWriter has been through some testing. I shall wait until MP2009 is released before releasing it. The new version adds support for "Groups" in RouteReader. Basically a pushpin set can contain multiple groups, and you can select one (or more) groups from the pushpinset for the route. A pushpin can be in multiple groups, and special groups can be assigned for the start and end locations.

I've also been building a new PC for testing. Perhaps I should have gone for build-to-order like my dev PC, but I ended up having to replace one of the disks (one of 2 died within 24 hours), and the cpu fan. The initial cpu fan was a piece of junk with plastic motherboard clips. The new one has screws which work much better. Unfortunately it is intended for gamers so it has a blue LED - making it look a bit like a "New Who" Dalek with the black & LED blue colour scheme. (why are all the cpu fans in Fry's either over-engineered and showey things sold to suckers^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hgamers, and the others are small cheaply built pieces of junk? There's no reasonable middle ground)

I found the cooling problem whilst testing a new MapPoint product I have under development. Performance was not as expected, and so I checked the temperatures: yep, only 1 core at 100% was enough to cause it to overheat and for the cpu to start throttling itself.

I guess I've tended to avoid blogs and bloggers, although I did post a few posts to the EcoMapCostaRica.com blog back in May. Anyway, I thought I should post the occasional post here so some of the mpaforums/mp2kmag people know what I'm up to.

So, first an introduction...

I'm Richard Marsden, owner of Winwaed Software Technology LLC, and operator of Mapping Tools for Microsoft® MapPoint® which sells a number of different MapPoint tools and add-ins. Many of these were written by myself, including MileCharter, RouteWriter, and MPSuperShape. A new product is under 'top secret' development but I may post something about that later. I've also worked a bit with Virtual Earth - I've written a Vista ISS tracking gadget, the maps on EcoMapCostaRica.com, and I've recently been awarded the Virtual Earth MVP.

I've written a few articles for this site, and I have promised a new one for Eric about calling MapPoint from C# using late binding. I have this working successfully in a test bed program, so it shouldn't take much to convert it into a short demo program. Are there any simple operations that you'd like to see a demo program do? Let me know, otherwise it will be yet another "find a route from one famous place to another famous place" demo!
