Calculated route jumps off motorway carriageway

Using MapPoint 2002, I'm getting an annoying difference in behaviour when it comes to specifying points on a motorway which I subsequently want to use as start/stop/end points in calculating a shortest route. The idea behind this is construction sites - where access is directly off a (normally) limited-access road.

So what I do is put a marker directly on a carriageway - this is the nearest point to the construction site that MapPoint should be able make any sense of. I zoom right in, click on one of the 2 carriageways to get a little white circle marker (same happens if I start off with a pushpin), add it to the route planner then calculate the route. The resulting route will jump straight off the motorway to a minor unconnected road if one exists close enough. In some circumstances the minor road is not even the nearest!

Having got this far, I now have a square route marker over the site. If I then drag the square route marker along the same carriageway slightly and drop it (even if it's now nearer the minor road), this triggers an immediate re-routing which then corrects the 'jumping' off the motorway.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is there any way around it, because ideally I'd like this to work correctly and automatically through a VB program for an imported set of pushpins.

Incidentally, I wouldn't want to change the preferences to avoid minor roads!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim.

hi,
i'm having a similar problem.. anybody got a fix for this? i route around a set of points defined using lon/lat, but when you place one on the motorway it routes you via the closest road which jumps onto the motorway (not using a junction?!?).. if you move it (and even put it back where the app put it) it will re-calc correctly.. but then i loose the link to the locations in my application..

any thoughts?

hi,
i've still got this as a problem.. here are some steps to re-create in mappoint standalone.

create a start and end point for a route..
click somewhere on a motorway carridge and then right click the little white circle you've just created.. and select add as stop..

don't drag or move the point after you've added it to the route!

then click optimise or get directions.. what you'll end up with is a route that jumps from a local road to the motorway and back again..

if you then grab the location and move it slightly it will then route correctly..

my software places pushpins and routes around then and this happens evertime they put a stop on a motorway carridge.. (which they need todo)..

any thoughts?

Aah now I understeand (I think). Nobody lives in a motorway so probably Mappoint lacks start / end if one of it is on it ?

Hi Chris,

The local roads jumps only apears when in my aplication code I represent the waypoints in the map and then I calculate the route (VB6.0 'Route.Calculate'). But if I try to represent the same route with the Mappoint Program with only 2 points the route is throught a motorway!! Why??

Do you have any idea???

I have tried to identify each waypoint with a real location and to save each segment as quickest route, but still is jumping to the local roads...

Iīm sorry for my english...

Please help!!!

I don't know if this will help but:

Where I work we have a lot of bridges - some of the bridges have weight or time restrictions that prevent 'big' trucks from using them. MapPoint doesn't know of these restrictions. So sometimes I create a fake customer stop in the middle of the bridge that I want the truck to use. This causes the .calculate to use the right route.

Can you do this with the construction on the motorway? Create a fake stop at the construction site and see if it forces the route onto the motor way and prevents this jump to the local roads.
