Can't view map when using the GPS device

I used Vismation Data Import Utility to import a shape file into a map. There is a large amount of imported shape data and now when I try to use my GPS receiver, my map won't display. Any ideas on how to overcome the problem?

Sounds odd. So before you turn on your GPS is works but when you do it stops working? I wonder if there is so much data you imported that the redraw can't keep up.

I can be sitting still, but as soon as I activate the GPS, it blanks out the screen. I'm guessing that it has to do with the amount of data, but I'm still hoping for a solution!

Reducing the amount of data and turning off some map features may help. Also, try reducing the size of the window, don't use the full screen mode, and don't run the window maximized.

Can you pan around the map or is it real slow to redraw?

I can pan when not in GPS mode. It is just slow.

Re: Can't view map when using the GPS device

I suspect that is what it is - the GPS will be causing more map updates, so if the shapes take a few seconds to display, then you might not see them at all!

Try reducing the number of shapes and/or simplifying them.
A lot of 'professional' shapefiles have a lot of data points to define the shape accurately. Often you don't need all these points.
There are a number of simplification tools around - there's an online one although I don't have the URL handy (worked fine for me with some fairly large large datasets), and our own MPSuperShape has a simplify option.
