The add-on to mappoint is very good...truely nice work.....but the problem still exists, whereby it is still not possible to capture a street level map of a large city (even when the maximum panels are used)

This problem could perhaps be sorted out by increasing the current limit regarding panels

an even better solution would be to be able to define the territory (but perhaps this is not possible)

Re: Code to generate poster prints from mappoint

It is very viable to increase the number of panels. The difficulty is the maximum number pixels a final image can be. I'm not sure what the limit is to netpbm on processing the image files, but the physical limitation of GIF format is 65000x65000 pixels. Photoshop use to have a limitation of images of 30000x30000 pixels, but this seems to be increased in later versions. Any idea what I should set the maximum number of panels to?

Also, is there any interest in marking the background color as transparent? Supporting PNG files (or other formats) in addition to GIF?

I would set the 'panels' to an unlimited amount if possible, therby people can comment on the potential they have achieved i.e depending on the software they have used to open their maps.

with regard to "marking the background color as transparent? Supporting PNG files (or other formats) in addition to GIF?" .........yes i think this will help.

One further note, the red tracking cricle could perhaps be bigger.

I was thinking of making 2 digits available, but limit the total pixel width or height to 20000 pixels. I figure a 60" x 300 dpi = 18000, so 20000 should be good enough.

Not sure what red circle you are referring to.

it will be interesting to see if this will cover a street level map e.g New york city. I'm sure it will be good......the red circle is not an important issue, It was simply for visual purpose, it is the circle that moves when the program is working.

    once again great work.

Attached is an update to the tool. It supports up to 2 digit for the number of panels, as long as the total pixel width is not over 20000 (still need to make the code change to check the height). I also added a checkbox to make the background color transparent and support for png files (just change the extension to .png or use file picker).

I have also created a couple of maps. The first being a 3x3 panel map generated at 3000 pixels per panel at an altitude of 12. The second being a 12x12 panel map generated at 1000 pixels per panel at an altitude of 4. It is interesting that you can see more detail in the second map (12x12x1000x4).

Let me know what you think!

I spent all day yesterday experimenting with this, you have done a fantastic job, the results are great.....just one thing, why have you put a limit on the pixel width (up to 20000). Is it not possible to extend or leave it open? I think this will really help with bigger maps.

If it is not possible then this is still a great piece of work and probably the best contribution to mapfourm...... well done.

    Hi tonyt,

It is an established fact that a bitmap, the basis for all images,
    has a maximum size of 32768 x 32768 pixels.

Since blitzkriegoutlaw's utility is capturing panels of 3500 or less,
these must add up to the maximum size.

if anyone can sort it out then blitzkriegoutlaw can.

Mike does your utility have more capability?

    Hi tonyt,

I think you're right, blitzkriegoutlaw is quite capable.
    Unfortunately, I don't have a utility available.

The service I provide to the MapPoint Community is simply to
capture maps at standard sizes up to 108'x144' that include
the proper copyright credits and adjustment for curvature of
    the Earth.

Naturally, one can request additional features such as insets,
icons, logos, titles, legends, shaded overlap of territories, etc.

    Thanks for asking ...
