Comparing mapping tools, something simple to place truck icons on a map

I am writing an application for pizza delivery, taxis, trucks etc.

For the front end dispaly/ map render:
  • I am looking for a tool similar to mappoint with a map control, where I can place icons of trucks and update them(lat, long) as they move, draw a road, etc... do you know of any others besides Mappoint and what has your experience been?
  • What is the licensing scheme behind them, any suggestions on this as well?
  • Or if there is another map opensource/freeware you may have toyed with?
  • For starters I am looking at something a pizza store can afford. I could later consider the volume issues...

Re: Comparing mapping tools, something simple to place truck icons on a map

Your question doesn't make sense or the poll mixes two or three questions?

Anyway, note that the second P in MapPoint is capitalized, also the I in MapInfo, also all of ESRI should be capitalized.

My own vote is that they should all be easy to use with c#.

For a fleet tracking solution as you describe, with MapPoint you may need to get a Fleet license which is $750 (instead of the normal retail license) and available through MapPoint ISV-R providers and also through MS volume licensing.

good luck!
Eric

Re: Comparing mapping tools, something simple to place truck icons on a map

MapPoint seems to be the easiest in that there's quite a bit of support.

Only place it comes short that I've found so far is that when I try to route 55,000 addresses in our area, between 3,000 and 4,000 of them aren't in MapPoint, some of which were constructed 3 years ago.

I'm able to work around it by entering longitudes and latitudes for that data but it just seems strange that a huge program like MapPoint wouldn't update data sets often.

Seems kind of silly to me to poll for which mapping tool to use in a mappoint forum...

It's like going to a hockey game and polling to see how many there like hockey.
