Here's a map using the political map style with State and Country boundaries, but everything else (cities, roads) turned off. Nice clean map! Maybe you'd just want to get rid of the rivers. Zipped PTM file also attached.

Parks & Waterways in the St. Louis Metra Area. Points of Interest also brings up a lot of "interesting" stuff although at this scale it is a bit cluttered.

Here's a map with city labels turned off along and no transportation layers. This highlights the country and state/province boundaries making for a clean map on which to display state/province level data.
