    Creating a heat map

    Hi

Excuse the stupidity here! I have a list of 2-3,000 UK postcodes that I would like to create as a heat map showing me where my customers are coming from. Apart from the fact that Mappoint only seems to show really basic design output, I can only get it to show the postcodes as pushpins.

My CSV file has 1 column called 'postcodes'

Also what is the difference between importing and linking, I assume linking is somewhat more 'live'?

Please do PM me or email me to sward@airkix.com

    Many thanks.

    Sward0,

Welcome to our humble forum! Please don't hesitate to offer suggestions and join in on any conversations.

During the Import Data Wizard, choose the Shaded Area map type instead of Pushpin. This way you can do shading based on count or density. Does this satisfy your heat map requirements?

Linking will remember where the data came from and automatically remap when you do a refresh.

hope this helps, let us know how it goes.

Thanks, that's exactly what I did but all the data type of options are 'greyed out' and the pushpins at the bottom are selected.

I have tried the file as CSV and XLSX but it's the same.

    Re: Creating a heat map

You sent me your data and there was a single column with postcodes.

Actually you need to add another column. It can be anything, just copy/paste the Postcode column and call it something else like Name.

The issue is that internally, MapPoint needs to have a column to map, and it can't be the same column it used to match to the map.

This is true even if you are just doing a heat map with the Count.

After adding a second column and re-importing, I was able to make a map like the attached.

Let me know if this works for you and how you get along!

    Re: Creating a heat map

I am interested in creating a zip code heat map for the continental United States but I am having some trouble with zooming. I can import the data fine, but when I zoom out beyond a certain point (about 2,500 mi) my heat map disappears. I need to display the data at a zip code level, anyway to show a heat map zoomed out to 5,500 mi?

    Thanks,

    Jason

Need assistance in getting MP 2013 to show shaded areas by county in Canada when I zoom out. Anyone know how to fix this?

    Re: Creating a heat map

I think the trick with MapPoint is to make a very *large* window for MapPoint and then copy/paste the map image to another program such as Excel.
