.dat files are hidden internet files that store all of your surfing history
even if you delete the cookies and your history, if you have stuff on your
machine and do not want it to be retrieved you will have to delete the
index.dat files.
to do this boot into safe mode with command prompt then type this:
CD/ to get to the root directory
DEL Index.dat/s to delete the content of the files
shutdown -r to restart the computer after restart the files are still there but they are empty of all data.
Thats all i know on this subject later, happy tweeking.![]()
There's an article on this site for extracting the POI's.. it's not a quick process but should allow you to get what you want.

How do you open a dat file? with what program or what?

The .dat extension is very common.. are you talking about MapPoint?
Try NotePad or WordPad first (you might also try a shareware program called TextPad).
Also, try importing it into Excel or Access specifying the file type as D-Base or dbf.
If you're still having no luck, try opening it with a binary editor and see if the file type is mentioned in the first several characters of the file..
best,
Eric
