Data Mapping does not rollup totals from Excel

I have an excel spreadsheet of customers (one per line) with unique id nos. I have one column of postcode areas -which are correct and a column of annual spent (randomly generated whilst I get to grips with things).

When I create a datamap based on postcode areas it does not rollup all the totals. for example I have about 70 entries for the W area. These total about £7 million (I wish) however in the case of a shaded area map it only brings through the first entry and in the case of a shaded circle map it appears to pick one near the middle.

I have tried including the ref column, not including the ref column, taking the relevant columns to a new spreadsheet so there are only 2 or 3 to bring thorough - but all to no avail

The only way I can get it to work is to create a table using sumif in excel (so I have one entry per area) and use this.

I thought the whole point of the software was to roll up this type of infor for you or am I missing something?

Yes, you have to have one record per geography unit you would like to map, it will not do the roll-up for you 'on the fly'. The sumif sounds like a good method, I tend to also use Group By's in Access for this kind of thing.
