Greetings all:

I have an application that integrates with MapPoint. Using the full North American version it works fine. I'm trying to test my app with the European version of MapPoint to make sure that it will work equally well. The only European version I have is the 60-day trial. Using it I receive a 'Class not registered' error. Does anyone know if that's due to the fact that it's a Trial version or is it due to the fact that it's the European version of MapPoint?

The only source of European MapPoint I've seen is on Amazon, and I'm not sure I want to spring for $800 just to be able to test my application.

It should be because it's the EU version, the trial and the full versions of the software funtion identically.

Check the code, it may instantiate MapPoint differently? Also, because of the different levels of geography available in different countries, it may throw up an error for something which exists only in the U.S.?

The current price on Amazon.co.uk works out at about that. But that is because they're out of stock, and the quoted price is from a third party - probably gouging the market!

Amazon.co.uk themselves won't ship MapPoint Europe to the US at Microsoft's request, but the third party might.

In the past, I've bought MapPoint Europe (2002) from Grey Matter:

There's also EBay, but last time I looked on ebay.co.uk, the main seller looked to be hawking pirated copies (if the price is too good to be true, it probably is...)

Also note that with the US dollar where it is, any genuine price from Europe will look expensive.

It sounds like the MapPoint European Maps COM object isn't registered correctly. Try registering it through the Start Menu Run by typing in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft MapPoint Europe\MapPoint.exe" -regserver

It that fails try reinstalling the MapPoint trial.

Having just returned from London, I'm quite aware that things are pricey for those of us paying in dollars. I checked all over for a copy of MapPoint to bring back with me, but none of the stores had it on the shelf. (I'm not surprised. You don't see MapPoint on the shelf here at home that often either.)

I'll check to see if the executables (US vs European) are named the same. I could swear that I had this working before by using my US copy of MapPoint with the European maps, but I'm not absolutely certain of that, since it was a year ago when I last visited this issue.

That's possible. But the problem is arising for my client as well as me, so I think it's a bigger issue. But I'll try using RegServer and see what happens.

As far as everyone knows, should the full European version be substitutable for the NA edition (programatically speaking)?

Yes it should work the same, but what object name are you using to create the main MapPoint object?
The documentation has the following examples to select which version you use:

	Set MPAppEur = CreateObject("MapPoint.Application.EU")

"MapPoint.Application" should use the default (whichever you used last).
You're probably know this already - I'm just mentioning incase you're creating the NA version.

Thank you! I think this is the exact problem. I had done some searching in the docs and didn't see anything. I must not have looked hard enough. I'll try this and see if it's happier.

Thanks, that was exactly my problem (and how I missed what you quoted in the help file i do not know). My app is written in Delphi, and for those that don't know Delphi there are three ways to call MapPoint (using the MapPoint control, early binding and late binding). I was using the control, which doesn't give the option to specify the name of the MapPoint executable. Switching to the early binding method fixed the problem. For those who are using Delphi, here's the (very much abbreviated) code I used:
