Display Data as label on map

I have very simple data - column 1 is a state name, column 2 is the count by that state. Ideally I want a shaded US map and I want to display the number in column 2 in the appropriate state shape. How in the world do I get it to do that..I have everything except the display of the number working. I have Mappoint 2010. thanks!

I would recommend to import twice! Once as a shaded area map, and then second time as a pushpin. Then you can show the "Name only" balloon for the pushpin to get the number to pop up. Let me know if this makes sense or I can explain more.

Thanks for the reply...I did that and it does show the count when I hover over the pin...anyway I can get that balloon to be a label on the map - I will be pulling that map out for a newsletter for staff and alums of a college...

Rather than showing the full balloon, right-click and set to Show Name or Name Only, I forget what the menu says. Then you have a little [x] next to the name so you can close it, but it's not too bad.

To manage Pushpin balloon en masse, I recommend the Pushpin Tool ($75) Pushpin Tool Add-in - MP2K Magazine

Also, take a read through this thread -- this would be another way to do it, Showing data on a map (county)

Note that the person I was talking to in the thread ended up opting for the Name balloons rather than my label maker tool

I got a label to show but it's the state name! and I can't seem to get it to display the count for that state. *janice pulls out hair* The coding in the other case on line - is that in Excel and do I just pull mappoint in to excel to do that? I'm working straight in mappoint but can shift the cube, as it where, to do that.

When you are importing the states as pushpins, the trick is to specify the count as the "Name" field!

Regarding the label maker tool, it would probably need some custom modification to work with your data. Do you have someone who knows how to write Excel VBA macro's who could look at it? It would probably only need minor adjustments.

Great, let me know if you need any help.

By the way, yeah I think both of these things could be easier. They did add an option to automatically pop up or down all the balloons in I think MapPoint 2010, but still no option for showing Name Only, for that you still need to do them all manually or invest in the Pushpin Tool. Also, you can see in the other thread, I thought about making a generic tool for labeling, I guess I'll still do that eventually
