Error: Licensing initialisation error has occurred

"Licensing initialisation error has occurred. Please contact customer support for more assistance. Error 0x80070020".

Has anyone seen this with MapPoint 2009?

I'm running the MSDN edition - so the license is valid. The error occurs when a C# (.NET 2) program calls MapPoint 2009 in the background. The problem is intermittent.

Richard, it has also happened to a few users of Microsoft Streets & Trips 2009. There has been some feedback from Microsoft posted at Streets and Trips 2009 licensing initialization error

Re: Error: Licensing initialisation error has occurred

Thanks Marvin. The error code is different, but it sounds like it might be the "licensing database" that is the problem. I don't think it is a corrupt database though - wouldn't this cause the error to occur all the time?

I'm working in a multi-threaded environment, so I'm wondering if the database is having trouble with multiple checks at the same time?

Re: Error: Licensing initialisation error has occurred

One person with an application that would repeatedly instantiate, close, and re-instantiate MapPoint was having this problem with the retail version (activated). I told him I hoped the MSDN volume version would solve it, hmm.. but at least I have not heard back from him.

I wonder if a license file is locked for a brief moment while MapPoint is opening? If that theory is correct, a test for the file being locked and a pause/wait before opening MapPoint would be the solution ?

Re: Error: Licensing initialisation error has occurred

Yes I'm doing that
You can have two MapPoints on parallel threads opening the same map file. I'm not sure if it works with different map files or not. A lock solves this.

I have a working theory involving Close rather than Open. I'm still working on a proper solution, but it looks like you can't start a MapPoint instance whilst one is still closing.
