I have a map with two spreadsheets imported. One spreadsheet creates a list of territories, defined by area code. The other spreadsheet creates pinpoints of individuals based on their address, which includes their area code.

Is it possible to extract that list of individuals, including which territory they fell into?

If not, does anyone know a way I could create a similar effect with Excel? Essentially adding a column that sorts them into a territory based off of their area code?

It should be easy enough to sort your pushpins by area code to determine their match to territory.
This should take a few minutes, if I had the two sheets.
If they don't match up, it will require point in polygon operation.

Each territory might be 20 zip codes, but only have a handful of individuals pinpointed inside it (and they might all be in the same zip code). I'm not sure how to match that up.

Are we talking zip codes or area codes?

Area codes are the first three digits of a phone number e.g. the 123 in

(123)-456-7890

Zip codes are postal codes in the U.S. e.g the 60601 in

123 Main St.
Chicago, IL 60601

There is a Territories Wizard method for creating 3-digit zips.
The problem is that one needs the shapes to export from and then match to the individuals.

Ack, sorry. Zip. I just realized I typed "area code" in the first post, but I absolutely meant Zip code. I've been working with both all week and my wires must've gotten crossed.

I'm working with 89 different territories and none of them have straight boarders. Some even have "islands" within other territories. I'd really like to avoid shapes if at all possible, which I know is probably asking a lot. I'm beginning to wonder if this is maybe more of an issue for Excel.

I guess, in essence, my question is: Is it possible to combine data from two different sheets in MapPoint? Can I extract Pinpoints to Excel that includes a column letting me know which territory those Pinpoints came from?

You can't really, there's no way for MapPoint to detect which territory a pushpin is in unfortunately, but the easy work-around is to just draw a free-form shape around all the pushpins in a territory, and then right-click on the shape and Export to Excel. Maybe not so easy with 89 territories and islands and the like, but shouldn't take more than a few hours?

OR - maybe you don't need MapPoint at all, if your pushpin address zip codes are all contained on the other worksheet that has the zip code territories, then you could just do a VLookup in Excel. I think that's what Michael was talking about in the first reply.

Thank you kindly, Eric. I think VLookup is probably exactly what I'm looking for. I just did a quick search on how to do them. Beautiful. This helps immensely.
