| Field Format issues with import from Excel I have a problem importing data from Excel. Apparently MapPoint (Europe 2002) treats the data as non-numeric or single-value, since `Map Types' Pie Chart - Series Column Chart are greyed out, as well as all of the 'Combine Data by' options except -Count-. Oddly, the -same- data imported from an Access database works fine, as well as expoerted to a .csv file and -then- imported in MapPoint. I reckon it must have something to do with the Cell-formatting in the Excel file (tried Number and Text), but both did not work. Anyone? | Solved!
This problem with importing data from Excel seems to be coming from the Excel - MapPoint interface. In my Excel sheet, the 1st row are the field identifiers (City, Address 1, etc), the 2nd row (which is hidden) contains the Data Type identifier, that a small "Input Aid" VBA app I wrote, uses for field validation (e.g. when a data type is set to ###, the app expects a numerical value). When I remove this row, the import process works as smooth as a baby's bottom. The process seemed to have "hung" on this 2nd row, when importing from Excel. Judging by the effect, the Excel - MapPoint interface probably expects something from the 1st row of data (usually the 2nd row in a sheet) when interpreting data fields. This would imply that MapPoint does not only look at field identifiers, but also at the actual data itself before importing addresses from Excel. Emphasizing the probability of this, is the fact that an import from a .CSV text file, holding -exactly- the same data, works perfect. This Text - MapPoint interface probably only works with the field identifiers and does not expect anything else in the rows after that (it simply 'disregards' the row with the Data Type identifiers). 1 mistery solved and another in its place. Anyway, this discussion might help the next bloke looking for answers. Regards Pieter-Joost |
