Find fails with full install but not partial

I have an IBM ThinkPad running XP SP2. If I do a full install of MapPoint 2004 (either NA or EU), then type Ctrl+F or select Find at the UI, there is a pause for a few seconds, the Find dialog doesn't appear then MapPoint disappears from the screen and memory with no error message. The same thing happens with automation of either the app or the MapPoint control. If I do a partial install, everything works correctly. I have defined and connected a local printer, I am not on a network and my ADO is up-to-date. Full install works OK on my desktop so the CDs are alright.

Any ideas?
