The symbols I use most (circles, squares, triangles) have changed in MP 2010 from the 2006 symbols. The old ones were more primary color with no gradient (or whatever you call that effect).

I've found that the old style symbols "pop" on my maps better than the new ones, which can get lost on the background. Has anyone found a way to bring in the old symbols (like the patch for MP09)? Or, is there a way to create and import them?

There was a Microsoft download with all the bmp's of the pushpin symbols, check the Microsoft download center.

But when I run it, I can't figure out where the images are extracted or how to find them to import them? any ideas?

It should extract them to whatever folder you ran the images.exe file in. It will put all of them in a folder called "Pushpin Images".
