Help newbie pushpin field names and symbols

    Hello to everyone.

Two questions if anyone can help

    1. Is it possible to change field names when data in imported from excel e.g. I wish to change field name 'territory' to 'telephone'

    2. When importing I have four groups so is it possible to allocate a custom symbol when importing or can I only change after import.

    Thanks in advance

    Keith

    Hi Keith,

As far as question number 2 goes, I am pretty sure this is possible to program. Alternatively, if your four datasets are going to have the same names and symbols each time you import, you can create your datasets once through the Link Data wizard, assign the symbols you want, and then simply use Update Linked Records when your data changes.

    Conor thank you.

Sorry but this thicky still has problems.

Excel Data is in the form

Longitude, Latitude, Name, Name2, Telephone, Address 1, City, Number
-1.1665,50.6671, Adgestone, 01301 702253, Lower Road, Caravan Club Site, 1

    The last number varies from 1 to 4 and I have 104 number 1, 34 number 2, 3969 number 3 and 2832 number 4.

When using data I am trying to group be number or City.

I suppose the other way is to import each one separately and save map

    Hi Keith,

I am not quite 100% sure if this is because of your data. I am assuming each piece of data you provided in Excel corresponds to one column of your Excel sheet.

Does MapPoint think you are providing it territory data instead of a telephone number? If so, to preserve the telephone number data, make sure that <Other Data> instead of <Territory> is specified for the telephone number column in the "Data Type:" section that appears when you are in the Import Data Wizard.

A simple way to continually group and present the data into the 4 numbers of your final column is to put groups 1,2,3, and 4 into one spreadsheet with multiple tabs. Group 1 is the first tab of the spreadsheet, Group 2 is the second tab, etc.

When you go to import your data, use the Link Data Wizard 4 times, once on each tab of the spreadsheet. You should have 4 different datasets now, each with the default red pushpin. Now you can go into the dataset properties and rename your pushpins and change the symbol to whatever you want. Save the .ptm file afterward.

Whenever you have to add or delete records, you can then just add or remove them from the spreadsheet that your original data came from, then open up the .ptm file and go to Data... Update linked records. Your MapPoint map will then update any changes made in the spreadsheet. No renaming of datasets or changing of symbols is necessary!

    HTH,
    Conor
