We use MapPoint to enter latitude/longitude for auto crashes.
I work for a state Dept of Transportation. Traditionally, our crashes have been located by a "On Road/At Road" combination, with a possible offset from the named intersection in either feet or miles, and a direction. The app I wrote allows you to click your mouse down in the middle of the intersection, and drag the mouse up whatever leg of the intersection is appropriate, until you arrive at the correct offset. As you drag, counters register the distance from the click point in both feet and miles. When you let up the mouse button, the current latitude/longitude is stored, and when you click a "Commit" button, the stored lat/lon is inserted into the appropriate row of an Access database.
I use it to map voters, campaign volunteers and polling places.
- Pushpins are coded to reflect voting history or other demographics.
- Efficient routes can be given to volunteers who drive to pick up voters on Election Day or deliver yard signs to supporters.
- Strategies can be influenced by the strengths and weaknesses identified in an accessible way MapPoint does so well.
- Past election results can be charted and otherwise plotted to show ideal target areas for a new campaign.
- Locating supporters who live near major intersections to hit them up for a request to let us install a large campaign fence sign.
- Seeing where there is a good area for voter registration drives based on current population and registered voters plus past voting performance (party preference).
