| How many significant digits? I will appreciate to receive reply for a question given below: When geodetic coordinates are obtained from a GPS receiver, how many of the digits after decimal points are significant if the data is recorded in decimal degree format? Does the number of significant digits depend on the accuracy of receiver used (i.e single frequency recreational grade to dual frequency survey grade receiver)? If yes, then what rule governs and why?         |

Why do you need to know? Could you just test on some units? You might get better luck asking an easier-put, more specific question (i.e. how many digits do you get from this device, etc) from some of the manufacturer web site forums, but with luck, maybe someone here will know the answer  - Eric

9 digits for the million dollar military versions, 7 for the generic consumer Why? The mil spec has a resolution of 30cm, and there are 1 billion centimeters from the equator to the N or S pole- so our accuracy is 30/10^9 The civ spec resolution is about 15m, and there are 10 million meters, accuracy is 15/10^7 Last edited by lfdmike; 06-23-2008 at 11:26 AM. |
