I am using MapPoint 2000 and I am having problems displaying and printing shaded area maps of the entire U.S. Basically, I imported an Excel file with approx. 30,000 records. I am using zip code to plot the map. My problem is that after the import completes, MapPoint refuses to display the shaded areas for a zoom level that will display the entire U.S. (it will only display the shaded areas for a zoom level no greater than 225 miles). Is there any way to display shaded area maps for the entire U.S. when importing files with this many zip codes? If not, do future versions of the program allow you to do this?

MapPoint 2002 will not allow you to display or print shaded area maps using 5-digit ZIP code boundaries at altitudes of over 2500 miles. The rationale behind this is that at altitudes of 6,000 miles or higher(which is what you need to view the entire US), smaller ZIP code areas are no longer visible on the screen. However, this functionality would be useful, especially if you have a large-format printer or very high-resolution screen, so we have passed this on to Microsoft as a feature request.

The best suggestion we can give you for now is to aggregate your data to the 3-digit ZIP code level, and map it at that level. 3-digit ZIP code boundaries can be displayed at the altitudes required to see the entire US.
