I must be blind - GPS Transmission from a fleet

I know this has probably been beat to death in these forums, but I haven't found anything that goes answers the question. If there is a FAQ or a nice thread that you know about please point me to it, please. I sort of expected to see an entire forum dedicated to this topic. I feel somewhat ignorent because everybody else seems to have solved the issue. Not me.

I figure something that many of you do is get GPS coordinates from a moving vehicle(s) and show them on a map back at a central location such as a dispatch. Right? It's what I want to do.

It's not the application I am designing, but for now let's pretend we want to track a fleet of trucks and show their location back at 'dispatch'. Initially all we care about is knowing what truck is where on the map. Maybe in the future we would want to have maps inside the trucks to help with directions, etc. but that is for later.

How to transmit the GPS coordinates using something you mount in the vehicle ? I have seen several possible answers but to go down a trail and be wrong is an expensive mistake. So I'll draw upon this fine forum for advice.

The solution that I am currently seeing over and over is using cellular networks to transmit the data. A unit in the vehicle sends out a packet of data (GPS location and other info) and it's received back at dispatch for processing. I found a company called HunterPro (www.HunterPro.com) that has a package for this. Don't know anything about them. You negotiate rates with the cellular network and off you go.

I figure there must be many vendors that offer products like the HunterPro. Any suggestions?

Or, do most of you NOT use something like this? Maybe magic? Or use Nextel to walkie-talkie coordinates back every few seconds? I'm kidding of course.

Thanks in advance for your time. I hope I haven't repeated a frequent question and I just couldn't find the proper threds.

Hi,

If you have the need to control the device in the vehicles completely I recommand you Aplicom boardcomputers http://www.aplicom.fi

Their boardcomputers are programmable in C or in Java depending on the model. I work with these material for years now.
