I need to close a roadway for a bridge-out

Hi,

I am finding that I need to close down a particular route so that MapPoint will find another way when it calculates the best route.

Does anyone know if this is possible? And if so, would you also know which functions I would call to make this work?

Thanks,
Bob

You need to use "Avoid Areas". I haven't done much with them, but I understand they're a bit limited. Eg. the route doesn't necessarily avoid the marked area, but only avoids intersections within the area.

You do this by drawing the avoid area as a Shape. Then set the shape's Avoided property to turn it into an Avoided Area.

Richard is correct.. some years ago I prepared a set of Avoidance Polygons for a trucking application in the NY-CT-NJ tri-state area... somehow just using intersections worked properly because of the way the on/off ramps were coded in the street network database, when a major road needed to be avoided, there was always an unconnected crossroad that could pass freely underneath. I still attribute it partly to luck, I'm not sure it would work in other states such as my home state IL where trucks are not allowed on many streets.
