Identifying Speed Traps in Microsoft Virtual Earth

The theme for this blog lately seems to be how Microsoft Virtual Earth is allowing travelers to better visualize conditions along their travel routes before commuting. Here is an interesting “mashup” using Virtual Earth to allow drivers to avoid speeding tickets!

Speedtrap uses drivers’ tips along with Virtual Earth to pinpoint different types of speed traps — from the human to the mechanical — and warn drivers about those locations in hopes of helping them avoid tickets. This information can be downloaded to portable navigation devices.

The moment you launch the application it recognizes your general location (I’m assuming based on your IP address). Speed traps are identified by dots colored to indicate the enforcement level: yellow for low, orange, for moderate, and red for high.

Speedtrap also appears to take advantage of the Virtual Earth traffic feature. Clicking on the “Local Traffic” option allows you to consider traffic flow along with the reported speed traps to identify the best route to take to arrive at your target destination in a timely manner.

    Hopefully that’s not traffic court!
