    Import and query of shapefiles

    Hello,

I'm somewhat new to MapPoint, but want to know if it's possible to import and query a shapefile in MapPoint, along the lines of ArcGIS.

My company's routing software is MapPoint. I want to import a shapefile of English Counties and be able to click on each of the points along a route that I've designated and find out which county each of the points are in. Even better, I'd then like to export the route and county information to Excel, but I'm happy to take this one step at a time.

So far, but using some third-party software, I've managed to import the shapefile, but it doesn't appear to have any information associated with it.

    Thanks

Re: Import and query of shapefiles

There's a fair chance that the third party tool is my MPSuperShape product?

The big problem with import/export products is different formats support different features. MapPoint may (or may not) support these features, and it is possible for MapPoint to support features which the formats don't support.

In the case of "proper GIS" file formats (eg. ESRI shapefiles, MapInfo MIF files), the main things lacking in MapPoint's support are holes (not a problem for most if not all UK counties), multi-shapes (probably not a big problem for you either - just be aware that there are going to be hundreds of "Argyll & Bute" shapes ), and database fields. MapPoint supports read-only database fields for pushpin (point) data but not shapes. Shapes can only have a name.

Once you have your shapes imported, MapPoint can "Export to Excel" all pushpins in that shape - select the shape, then select "Export to Excel" (right click popup menu iirc).

Exporting pushpins for all shapes is on the list of "to do" items for MPSuperShape.

Your product is MPSQL. This will give you almost unlimited opportunity to modify the data.
