Installing MapPoint 2006 Using a Flash Drive

I recently purchased a tablet PC with no CD drive. After trying several of the methods for installing MapPoint 2006 that were listed in the forum discussions involving "administrative install" and/or flash drives, nothing worked.

Here is a method that finally worked. It basically involves doing an "administrative install" (see the readme file on MapPoint disk 1) from a computer with a CD drive to a flash drive (at least 2GB) and then copying the resulting folder from the flash drive to the tablet PC's harddrive. Here are the details:

    • Do an “administrative install” of MapPoint 2006 to the Flash Drive as follows:
      • Insert Disc 1 of MapPoint 2006 into the CD Drive on the computer
      • Insert the Flash Drive
      • Click Start and then click Run
      • Type in “cmd”, which gives you a DOS Command Prompt screen
      • Type in “x:\Setup.exe /a” which starts MapPoint’s administrative installation process (x is the drive letter of your CD)
      • Follow screen directions to do an administrative install, selecting the drive letter of your Flash Drive to install to
      • Insert Disk 2 (Run Disc) in the CD drive when prompted
    • When done, copy the Administrative Installation folder you have created on the Flash Drive onto the harddrive of the tablet PC.
    • Run the Setup.exe file from the MapPoint installation folder you have just created on the tablet PC's harddrive.
    • The installation should then work (at least it did for me).

I haven't done this in a long time (recent versions of MapPoint NA are on a single DVD), but it seemed it always worked fine if you copy the contents of both CD's together in the same folder.

I think first copy the 2nd CD to the flash drive first, then copy the contents of the 1st CD on top of it. That should install fine without prompting for the 2nd CD.

    Hope that helps!

What happens when it fails? Is there an error or just prompting for the second disc?

If asks for the 2nd disc. If I clikc "ok" as if I had put the disc in, it goes back to the install screen for a minute or two and then asks for the disc again. I tried to open disc 2 on the flash drive but it wont open during this.

Re: Installing MapPoint 2006 Using a Flash Drive

Did you copy both discs into the root of the Flash drive?

It should be the same if you copy to the hard drive.

For instance, copy the whole CD2 to the folder C:\MapPoint06

Then copy the whole CD1 to the same folder C:\MapPoint06

If it prompts to overwrite files, say Yes.

Then you can install from C:\MapPoint06\Setup.Exe

If that works, then I would say copy the folder C:\MapPoint06 to the root of your Flash drive, for instance, copy it to E:\ if that is your Flash drive letter.

    hope this helps!

You do have both discs, right?

Another thing you might try to do is get two flash drives and copy CD1 onto one of them and CD2 onto the other?

Yes, I do have both discs. I'll try both of these options and let you know. Thanks
