I recently purchased a tablet PC with no CD drive. After trying several of the methods for installing MapPoint 2006 that were listed in the forum discussions involving "administrative install" and/or flash drives, nothing worked.
Here is a method that finally worked. It basically involves doing an "administrative install" (see the readme file on MapPoint disk 1) from a computer with a CD drive to a flash drive (at least 2GB) and then copying the resulting folder from the flash drive to the tablet PC's harddrive. Here are the details:
- Do an “administrative install” of MapPoint 2006 to the Flash Drive as follows:
- Insert Disc 1 of MapPoint 2006 into the CD Drive on the computer
- Insert the Flash Drive
- Click Start and then click Run
- Type in “cmd”, which gives you a DOS Command Prompt screen
- Type in “x:\Setup.exe /a” which starts MapPoint’s administrative installation process (x is the drive letter of your CD)
- Follow screen directions to do an administrative install, selecting the drive letter of your Flash Drive to install to
- Insert Disk 2 (Run Disc) in the CD drive when prompted
- When done, copy the Administrative Installation folder you have created on the Flash Drive onto the harddrive of the tablet PC.
- Run the Setup.exe file from the MapPoint installation folder you have just created on the tablet PC's harddrive.
- The installation should then work (at least it did for me).
