    interacting with map

    Hi guys,
We have a map-based project we’re working on and we need to decide which map engine to use. The main functionality is to find out if the map engine provides interactivity functionality which means that for example I can display a Vehicle @ a location on the map and be able to click on it and get the property information or invoke another child window. This basically boils down to a dynamic layer over the map so the click of the mouse can get the icon information and make a database call. Our application is a web-based application so we either have to have the map engine installed on the client machine and allow the browser to communicate with map or preferably have it on the server side and communicate with it through internet while having a viewer form of the map on the client side or embedded into the browser.
So I was wondering if anyone had tried such thing on the MapPoint and knows if this is doable using MapPoint.
Other functionality required but not as important is the following:
    1. Address to X, Y conversion and vs.
    2. Find the shortest route
We can always get this information through a routing server and provided the final X,Y to the mapPoint that is what I’m saying that is not as important as the active layer.

Would very much appreciate your feedbacks and if you can send me links of samples or examples…

    Cheers

    Yet mappint will do this

Yet mappint will do this, all you would do is have a set of pushpins (houses) and when you click of your vehicle (another set of pushpins) you get the nearest house pushpin (you can check the distance so if > x ignore) then get the pushpin data, if it was linked data you would simply go to that record. if it was unbound pushpin data then all you would do is get the pushpin ref you set when you created the pushpin, then go get the data from the backend database.

I have written a GPS fleet managment system, tracks vehicles, report like speeding, journey, stop time, time sheets bla bla all the comms are inside automated polling of vehicles I can go on for ever, all this in mappoint.

The only real problem is sometimes when a vehicle is on a road mappoint returns a rubbish position like the county and not M6 as it should. appart form this hicup it works fine.

P.S. I can even create a web page of a vehicles positon at by a simple call to mappoint :O)

sorry for the delay in answer

My app is for a stand slone PC, but I have tested a web version out because I will be creating a web version of my app when I get 5 mins!

Creating a web page of any map with pushpins is a function build into mappoint, all I did was get a FTP activex control and push the map onto the web server using this, this then allowed visibility of the vehicle on the web. if you wanted to get another vehicles position you clicked on a button and the web server requested a page for this vehicle (on my machine) by simple FTP a file with the vehicles ID in it, my app had a timer in it and it simply checked for the file every 30secs and delivered the requested page.

Hope this all makes sence and helps.
