looking for certain pushpins according to criteria imported from excel spreadsheet

I've imported an excel spreadsheet into map point. The sheet contains names and addresses and other information from our organization's database.

I was wondering if it's possible to look for certain people/pushpins based on the criteria/information on the spreadsheet. Currently I'm only aware of looking for places, sites, etc., that are already on the map in a certain area.

Can someone help me out here and let me know if I can search based on my own spreadsheet criteria?

You can't really do queries or filters against the dataset in MapPoint, but if you change the Map Type to Multiple Symbol then using a single field you could use different Pushpin Symbols to depict the data.

Programmatically you could loop over the dataset and using any arbitrary criteria (i.e. multiple data fields) change the symbols or move to a new dataset, though this might be more complicated than what you need. It might be easier to just do the filtering/queries in Excel and then re-import the results into MapPoint.

Re: looking for certain pushpins according to criteria imported from excel spreadsheet

    Eric --

Thanks for answering. Here's what I'd like to do. I don't have a lot of experience with Mappoint yet, so I'm sorry if my questions are too basic.

We have a database of donors, and the sheet I'm using is one that we ran through a company called Wealth Engine. The sheet contains all sorts of information -- name, address, etc, and something called the propensity to give score, which consists of two numbers.

What I'd like to do is have the map display different push pins based on the 2 p2G scores, and then be able to display the name and address of the contact with a click, but I'm not sure how to do this. I wasn't even sure how to or organize the push pins when I ran a test sheet. My intent is to import the excel data and then choose an area out to a fifty mile radius so I can find donors for our fundraisers to contact and research while they're on the road.

When you mentioned looping over the data set, what do you mean exactly? Take as much time as you need to answer -- the more detailed steps you can give the better. I'm going to be experimenting with this as well and see what I can deduce on my own. Thanks again.

You just want to display different symbols based on the one field/score right? Then I would go with the multiple symbol map option.

I'd recommend to get started with the Tutorials in the Help file, there's not one specifically for the Multiple Symbol map, but it would get you familiar with the Data Mapping Wizard and that would help a lot..

Is your score numeric or an alpha code?

I think it's just numeric -- two numbers separated by a dash, but if I choose the map style and try to specify 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, it won't let me because it says I have to have unique values. I think I'll have to get rid of the dashes somehow and have it look like a regular two digit number.

Can you map it in ranges? MapPoint is limited to 8 pushpins symbols per dataset when using the Multiple Symbol map.

If you need more than eight, can you break up your data into separate datasets in Excel and then re-import into MapPoint as separate datasets?
