Low cost GPS unit with SDK

I'm building a vb.net app that tracks all of our property mangers, and workers via Motoloral i730 GPS enabled phone. So far everything is working pretty good except for the fact that the phone has a 10 sec delay window when a user sends data and can't recieve any calls. So we had to resort to a 5 min GPS posting interval to our servers. This type of time interval is not exactly 'realtime'. So I was wondering what kind of GPS boxes that are out there with an simple SDK that I could hook up with to direct its GPS data to our servers, and of low cost. Any suggestions will be helpfull, thanks.

You might want to check out the MapPoint Location Server, this is designed preceisely to do something like this. Also check out MapPoint Partner list, a number of them are offering tracking solutions. Locarta and Fleetboss come to mind.

It is a good thing your application is not "real time" because then you would be violating the MP04 EULA. But you still have the problem that can't use handhelds with it either. Good thread on this topic at http://www.mp2kmag.com/mappoint/disc...pic.asp?t=3523. The relevent handheld posts are near the bottem.

If this is for a single application, you can also try www.dcs.com or www.it2me.com.

If you are planning to resell your product/service try www.geomicro.com and ask for the GeoLocator source code which is the client side application for iDEN phones.

Hi,

> phone has a 10 sec delay window

I assume it uses sms. The delay window is depending on the software that the SMS provider uses, and can go from less than a second until more than 10 seconds.

If it is vehicle thracking (as I do) you can use separate GPS receiver and a GSM on GPRS network. Also you need a small boardcomputer to handle all. Costs of hardware slicht higher of course But you have real time tracking of a fleet.

For display position on mappoint you need to have a delay of 15 seconds I think.
