When I used the data mapping wizard and mapped counts by county mp only mapped some of the data. I had done a "Group by" and "count " in Access after importing data originally in Excel. I added teh county field twice to the query design grid in order to be able to do both a group by and count after clicking the totals button on teh tool bar in teh query design view. My guess is the county data wasn't unique since some states have the same county names.

My question is: How do I run the query so I can get unique county values? If I add teh state field to the query it also has a "Group by" drop down so grouping by state wouldn't yield teh correct results either.

IT was worse when I tried to have the data mapping wizard use teh count function.

You'll need to combine the state and county into a single field, such as "Calhoun, MI", in addition to keeping both State and County fields.

Another question: the map turned out all right but I can't figure out how to have the actual value display in a sized or unsized circle. The book mentions it but doesn't actually tell you how.

And I'd like to display ethnic population counts in the same map. I assume you can only map two variables in one map (one as shaded area and the other as data in a sized or unsized circle). In other words, popluations of Indians by zip code along with members by zip code. Is there any way to display (in a legible way) populations of Indian, ASian, Latino, E. European and members all in teh same map? I suppose I could do a bar or pie chart along with data in a circle.

Yes - I tried the link. It wasn't very helpful except to say that they have additional data for purchase.

You can map many different datasets in a single map, although mapping more than a single shaded-area set can cause unreadable overlapping.

To display the value in a sized/unsized circle, right-click the dataset in the legend pane, select Data Fields..., and select the column which has the data you'd like shown.

When I made a calculated field in the Access query grid for county & state so county data would be unique, I actually made it twice - one to choose "Group by" and one to choose "count." but Access didn't like it and said I have two of hte same field.

It had worked using just hte county field twice for group by and count, it only didn't work when I did it as a calculated concatenation.

As far as displaying data, then you agree taht the best way for four ethnicities plus a membership value would be a bar chart plus a sized circle iwth the value inside?

I'd have to see your actual T-SQL query to evaulate it. Typically, there aren't any issues with multiple aggregates as long as coded properly. GIGO.

Yes, although I typically would use shaded area as a base (membership, and then multiple (4) circle datasets (ethnicity) thereon.

Gary, First in Access you need to create for crosstab query, the rows will be by State, then County. The columns will the ethnicity field, ideally this should be one field with a "code" in it. Access would create a "view" with a count of each code in different columns and a total column.

You may have to "play" with it a few times and cross check the counts to the match your base data. Then create simply query of the crosstab query and edit it by adding the column Paul suggests so it is first, so MapPoint can geocode it. How may counties are you dealing with?
