MapPoint 2006 Windows Crash With GPS On

Win XP Pro SP2
Athlon 64 3000
MapPoint 2006
Garmin GPS12XL
Serial - USB Converter for input

When I switch the GPS on in MP2006 and attempt to configure it.. Windows Crashes. (Black Screen - Reboot)

This appears to be connected in some way to the Microsoft Serial Ballpoint - However to the best of my knowledge I do not (and never have had this installed) - furthermore there is no reference to this in the device manager.

1. Has anyone else experienced this?
2. Is this problem related to MapPoint?
2. What can I do about it?

NB: GPS worked correctly in MP2004 - but haven`t had the GPS plugged in for a while and there have been many Windows updates in between times.

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave,

The nice things from "plug and play"

Windows sometimes incorrecly identyfy a GPS receiver as a "Microsoft Serial BallPoint". When it does it will install the incorrect drivers for it and your programs will do the wierest things.

Check in the Device manager for a 'BallPoint' thing. Can be on the serial ports, or eventually at the mouse settings. Disable or remove it. I think you have to reboot.

I can`t find any trace of Serial BallPoint on my PC....

Now I`m going to try running the GPS through the serial port... and update/reinstall a few drivers... to see if that sorts the problem...

Cheers
Dave

Just for info..

Problem solved now...

I uninstalled the default Microsoft PS2 Mouse drivers and installed the correct drivers for my Logitech mouse...

So whilst the problem reported as Serial Ballpoint it may also be the default mouse drivers that cause the problem...

anyway it's gone away.. and to celebrate I`m going round the world in MP2006 at 999 mph in GPS sim mode....
