Eric, what's your registry key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MapPoint\16.0\USA\Construc tionFileSite?
For me, automatic download gives an error message, because it is downloading the old construction data. The filesize is 166,671 bytes. Create a route, and it still says the construction data is out of date.
The manual download gives a file with size 168,201 bytes. However, the directions give the wrong location to put the file. It's wrong for Vista -- should be C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft MapPoint\16.0\Data It's also wrong for XP (version is now 16, not 15) and for Mappoint (obviously, the directory shouldn't be Streets & Trips if you're running Mappoint). Someone copy-pasted too much.
With a manual download, and putting the file in the right place, everything works as it should. Cretting a route no longer says construction data is out of date.
Yes, that's where it is...

Glad you got it to work.

That's the wrong file. ConstructionA7031618.dat, filesize 166,671 bytes.
The correct file is linked off download.microsoft.com. ConstructionA8011007.dat, filesize 168,201 bytes. You have to manually copy this one, but not to the directory that the article says to copy it to.
What file is in your C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft MapPoint\16.0\Data folder (or the equivalent on pre-Windows 6 systems)? I'm curious if you actually got it to work, or if you just got it not to give you an error. When I did automatic update, I ended up with the right filename, the wrong file, and an error.
The first time I ran it, it downloaded and did not give me an error..
But you're right, when I create a route, it says "your construction information is out of date".
Now when I try to download again, it DOES give me an error. hm...
So would a solution be to update the URL in the registry?

To answer my question, I think it does work... I changed the value to
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...onA8011007.dat
It said it downloaded successfully, and the "out of date" message does not appear in the directions when I create a route.
Certainly this is not the best solution as the direct URL to the latest dat file will change every time they release a new one, it is better to use the redirect. I think they just haven't updated the redirect yet... I'm sure they will.

Right, the redirect is there so it always grabs the freshest data. Anyway, someone goofed with this one -- wrong instructions, wrong file.

I think it's just temporary until someone there fixes the redirect..

I think wait and try again in a few weeks.. they have to fix the re-direct on their web site.
If you're ambitious you can download directly and install it, but if you run into difficulty note problems with the instructions above.
