I downloaded the install file for the trial version of Mappoint 2009. This is a file called mp_2009.exe. I am low on disk space (< 1GB) on my C: drive so want to install on my D: drive where I have plenty of free space.

mp_2009.exe is on my D: drive already, but I can't see how to tell it to install onto the D: drive. When I run the program it immediately starts installing on C:, then fails part way through due to lack of disk space. It shows the destination drive with a 'browse' button next to it, but it is greyed out, and there seems no opportunity to use it to override the default before the installation starts.

I tried running from a command prompt with -h and -help as parameters but it ignored tham.

Is there any way to force it to install on D? I really don't have the time to reorganise my c: drive to create space.

Any help much appreciated.

Actually I don't believe it had started the installation yet..

It it one big self-extracting compressed file. (I think it's actually a RAR file - which is similar to ZIP).

It is trying to self-extract to your temporary folder which is on your C drive.

So one trick would to Extract it using the application WinRAR. Instead of letting it extract by self-extract, download and install WinRAR and then go to Open Archive, set files of type to "All archives including self-extracting", and open MP_2009.exe. Then click on the "Extract To" button and tell it where you want it to extract. See attached.

Another potential work-around would be to change the location of your temporary folder... probably changing your TEMP environment variable to point to your D drive would do it.

In either case - when you start the actually installation, it should prompt you as to what drive you want to install it on..

It's free to download and trial and I don't think there are any functional limitations or expiration.

In any case, if you won't want to install WinRAR, then you should be able to change your TEMP folder location, Go to Control Panel, System, Advanced, Environment Variables, and change the TEMP and TMP paths in the User variables... if it doesn't work right away, then try rebooting first. I didn't try this, but it should work.

To install the WinRAR software I had to get a licence key. To get the key, I had to send two text messages (SMS) which I was warned in advance would cost me £6. I was told this would help fund R&D. It is not a problem - if it solves my problem I'm happy to pay - I was just a little taken aback.

There is probably a way to get the software without paying - I suspect this was technically a voluntary contribution, but either way I'm not unhappy.

I'll confirm tomorrow whether this trick actually works, though I'm confident it will. MapPoint sure seems a disk-hungry product though.

Gawd sorry - if you did a search, perhaps some shareware hosting site intercepted the request (or had higher rankings) and asked for the money. Not that they don't deserve it for bandwidth and the such, but you could have gotten the free trial from RARlabs I think. I should have provided a direct link.

In any case, check the license, but I think if you find the RARlabs product WinRAR useful for commercial purposes you should pay them!
