As discussed some in other threads, recent versions of MapPoint do not always display the right data in thematic or Shaded Area maps.

Cris describes it pretty well here --

... it's a sneaky little bug. In both 2010 and 2011, the data set colors may appear to map correctly at first, but when you change the zoom, add other data, or take a snap shot everything goes whacky. You lose one color. If you're low on resources, you can even lose all but one color. This is especially true if you are mapping data sets on top of territories - something we do all the time.

It's also deceptive because if you save the file and reopen it, you get your colors back. But only temporarily. Do anything and one color disappears again.

I thought the issue only occurs when Territories are on the map, but Cris suggests it can occur even without Territories.

Anyway, if anyone has more information or samples, please post! In particular, what versions exhibit the problems? Is it just MapPoint 2010/2011? Also, is the bug identical in both versions or did anything get better (or worse) with MapPoint 2011?

I haven't seen it for a while (perhaps a year ago with 2010), but it didn't strike me as being a resource-limitation issue. I usually have the Task Manager up for testing so I can see how much of CPU is being sucked up/etc.

It showed up for me at a training session for some folk here in Chicago again last Friday, very annoying. It was a small group, so we actually played around with this for a while trying to determine

1. when exactly it occurs,
2. how to reproduce it,
3. and the work-around.

#3 (the work-around) we did do! If you just save the map and re-open it, then things are OK.

We were not actually successful in nailing down #1 and #2, but we probably just didn't play around with it enough.
