As of today March 1st, 2011 MapPoint 2011 is now officially released!

I haven't seen a press release yet, but you can see the MapPoint Product Home page has been updated and a trial download for MapPoint 2011 North America is now available. I hear the team is now working hard to get MapPoint 2011 Europe out the door.

After two releases with significant changes (MapPoint 2009 and MapPoint 2010) this release focused primarily on the #1 customer request which is data updates. As such there are 88,000 additional miles of roads. Updates are in the US, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Larry Peterson on the MapPoint team at Microsoft writes --

This year we focused on updating our mapping data which is the #1 requested feature. With the 2011 version, you get 1.9 million points of interest (not only updated from 2010 but it was only 1.7million so many more have been added). There are also 88,000 additional miles of navigable roads in 2011 over 2010. That is pretty huge – equivalent to over 15 coast to coast round trips driving San Francisco between New York City.

I have been using MapPoint 2006 for years...waiting to update mostly for the inclusion of the 2010 census data. Has that data been included in 2011? If not, will it be made available without an upgrade fee?

No, I don't think the Census has published all the information yet, in any case it's not in MapPoint 2011.

I think it would be a major pain to get the 2010 census tract data into MapPoint 2011 when it is released, because the boundaries changes, but the county and state level demographic should be easy to import.

I'm a long term user of MapPoint. I use it all the time and look forward to updates even though I think a discount for upgrading is in order instead of charging full price.

I went ahead and purchased 2011 anyway and came away very unhappy.

There is no update whatsoever to the Census data. No updating from the 2007 estimates much less incorporating the 2010 data. Nor was there any change in the zip code database. To me, this lack of new data is inexcusabe in a newly released product. That's the reason I bought it.

I tested a few files for matching at zip only level, and found exacty the same missing zips. Some are older zips, like 60484 that they don't have at all. The program also won't find any 00*** zip codes in a search, although I doubt too many people try to search or match addresses in Puerto Rico. The Zips do exist on the map, you just can't search or match them when importing.

I also tested an address file of some 27,000 addresses delivery-point-verified by the USPS with all PO Boxes removed. The results were more addresses were not matched in the 2011 version than 2010. When the unmatched addresses were spot checked, it appears the reason is the address database contains duplicates. When the addess is located in the program's database it gets confused and won't select either address unless manually prompted to do so. Should be easy to fix, but they let it slip through.

I woudn't want any reader to mistake my comments. I truly do like the simpliciy of MapPoint and I strongly endorse the program. However, Microsoft needs to apprecite loyal users like me in pricing and not insult us with updates like this one.

I am new to MapPoint. I have a VB application that is using the MapPoint control. My map comes up fine, and I have a gps pane shows the current time and position provided by my gps device. How do I get at this gps data using the control? I need the UTC, the latitude, longitude, and height to make some calculations, but I can't find a way to get at these numbers, which are displayed on the gps pane. To me, this seems to be the most obvious think anyone would want to be able to do, yet I can't find anything on it

I'm using MP 2011 and just discovered that when I export territories not all the zip codes are exported and according to a list from the USPS not all current zip codes are in MS 2011...is there a way to update the zip code list in MS 20111?

Has Microsoft corrected the problem with mapping Broomfield County, Colorado. When mapping at the county level, Broomfield maps correctly. However, when mapping at the censustract level, MapPoint does not map all the censustracts for Broomfield and leaves blank grey spots (as if it is not part of the terrority) where the censustracts should be.

I am new to the tool. I wish to illustrate the distribution of field visits overlayed on a map in the UK and Ireland. (There will be hundreds of these). I then wish to overlay our logistics locations which we have 17.

Is this something easy to do. I would really appreciate any guidance.
