Mappoint access denied error

Hi,

I have been a user of Mappoint for a few years now. My company builds logistics routing optimizations in Visual Foxpro 9 and calls on Mappoint NA to display the results.
Recently, out of the blue, on one of our development computers, we could no longer access Mappoint 2006 from the foxpro exe. We got a message back that basically said, "access denied". We could still access Mappoint 2006 by itself, just not from a foxpro exe. We tried uninstalling and reinstalling 2006. We tried installing Mappoint 2004. Nothing helped. the same application worked fine on half a dozen other machines.

Then one of our clients who had been using our application for a couple of years, reports the same problem.

This is very strange. Does anyone have any ideas that could help us?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Mappoint access denied error

Ralph,

2 machines and the problem is around same period. That makes me think on a Windows upgrade ! I suggest to tell your customars to switch all automatic upgrades off until the problem is found.

As for the problem itself. Could it have something to do with rights ? I'm not sure but is there some log in windows where you can see history of updates ? Then you can compare with the other machine.

Re: Mappoint access denied error

I guess a windows update is possible. But here is another point I forgot to mention. My client is running windows 2000 while my development machine is using windows xp. I am not sure that it is politically feasible to ask my users (who are all external to my company) to stop windows update, but I will try and find a list of updates and see if there is anything in there. Maybe internet explorer 7 is the culprit.

Any other ideas would help.

Thanks for your input.

Ralph

Re: Mappoint access denied error

Hi Ralph,

The good thing is that you also have the problem on one of the development machines. I recall a tool at sysinternals.com especially designed to debug COM interfaces. Sorry dont know the name of it anymore and I'm not 100 percent sure it was at sysinternals. Please check over there because it may help to discover where the problem is.

What about rights ? eg one of them installed as admin, other one as normal user or so ? It gives no explanation wy it certainly happens. But I just drain my brain because the one guess hooks on the other one and finally there's solution

Re: Mappoint access denied error

Hi Ralph,

Can you also provide the exact error message you get ? Do you use the ActiveX control or type lib from foxPro ? If it is the ActiveX can you try to use the object model (type library) as a test ?

By means of test, can you launch MapPoint.exe from within the same foxpro application and from a new one with the win32 API ShellExecute ?

I come back if I have new (stupid) ideas

Re: Mappoint access denied error

I used the ocx activex control to access mappoint. I was using the type lib, but found that mappoint wasn't closing properly after I released it, so it was accumulating multiple copies of mappoint in memory.

I have attached a jpg of the error I got.

I am not sure about rights, but I think that would only be relevant if it didn't work from the start, not if it stopped working after many months of working fine.

Thanks for the ideas, I am hoping that this will be resolved in the fullness of time and time gets filled quickly.

Any suggestion could lead to the answer if we keep moving laterally.

Thanks again for turning your brain onto this.
Ralph

Hi Ralph,

Sounds stupid, but can you check if there is nothing read-only as well in MP as iin your application ?

Re: Mappoint access denied error

No read only.

Do you know of anyone or any phone number I can contact at Mappoint or Microsoft about this problem? I am at my wits' end.
