MapPoint altitude vs Virtual Earth zoom

    Hi!

I mainly use MapPoint in my application, and I want to use Virtual Earth to view the aerial map.

I want Virtual Earth to show the same map area as MapPoint. The map.Location property of MapPoint gives me the senter point to use in the VEMap.LoadMap method.

Then the problem is to zoom to the correct height.
The VEMap.LoadMap method has some parameters to set, among them zoom, which ranges from 0 to 19. 0 to 19 what, I wonder. Another parameter is VELatLong, which has latitude, longitude and altitude. I try to set the altiude to the one for my MapPoint map, but it doesn't seem to have any effect.

So, it seems like I have to set the zoom property. But what is relationship between this and the MapPoint altitude?

I think you may need to experiment to find approximate equivalent values.

The VE zoom level is probably on a logarithmic or pseudo-logarithmic scale.

The VELatLong altitude probably refers to the altitude (height) of the point - not the viewing height as it (confusingly) does in MapPoint.

    Obama Election Night party

I always thought it's funny how they use the term altitude in mapping products, but then Google Earth does now have a Flight Simulator - maybe that's the direction mapping products will evolve - into 3D Flight Simulators Microsoft has been talking about it too
site:mapforums.com Virtual Earth Flight Simulator - Google Search

The attached image is looking down on Hutchison Field in Grant Park where Obama and a million of this closest friends will be having an Election Night party this evening... you can imagine lots of SWAT helicopters with this actual view tonight. Security in Chicago downtown is extremely tight today.

    Hutchison Field

Here's a closer view... you can see there was actually an event going on that day. I think it's Lollapalooza!! hehe. If you zoom back to the north end of Grant Park - Butler Field - there is also a stage set up and it looks there may be some noise going on

    ..
    Sorry, I know

Re: MapPoint altitude vs Virtual Earth zoom

Here's some information about the zoom levels..

Virtual Earth, An Evangelist's Blog : Map Control: Zoom Levels -> Resolution (thanks, Joe!)

The zoom levels are fixed because the maps are pre-generated.. they are basically image tiles.

MapPoint maps are generated on-the-fly from vector data so you could have an unlimited number of zoom levels, but Virtual Earth is different. When you zoom in and out, it is actually calling up pre-generated image tiles, so there are a finite number of zoom levels ~ 20.

    hope that makes sense.

I hear a bit of crowd roaring, I'd suppose that Obama took Ohio easily.

I'm going to head out to try to get to Butler field to view the Jumbotron, but expect to be turned back

    So, brb.

By the way, I did not get out there... wicked crowd control.

The area highlighted in purple was basically no man's land.. all traffic & the lakefront path closed down on Lake Shore Drive as well.

I would have had to walk all the way around to Michigan Ave so I decided to forget it. Looking at the crowds on TV later, I'm glad I didn't try.
