| Mappoint Licenses My first question is can I roll this application out in-house without having to install mappoint on every PC, if so how? My second question is if I do role this out without installing mappoint on each PC do I need to have a full license for each PC it runs on or is there a run-time licence I can purchase (I'm looking to roll this out to about 40 machines so a full licence on each would prove costly) |

This is certainly an area where I wish I knew more. For example what the h3ll is with MapPoint Fleet Edition and the requirements to buy one copy of MapPoint for each vehicle tracked rather than each PC installed? OK then why would I pay more for Fleet Edition? What is a MapPoint control runtime? When and where do Office Service Assurances make sense? Here are few links that might point the original questioner in the direction to discounts, runtime, other options. If someone can figure this out give us a road map to volume licensing of MP2004 that would be great. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...Standalone.asp Quote:

Now i'm confused the quote you've given says I can have a Mappoint Control Runtime Licence and the link you've given says i can create a standalone installation, presumably by deffinition this wouldn't require a full install of mappoint and a full license. However Wilfred has claimed I do need a full license of mappoint for every PC my app runs on (Mappoint license aren't cheap!). Also presuming calv1ns is right and I can purchase runtime license how much cheaper are these. I remember when I used to build apps with access you could distribute runtime versions freely. This is all very confusing the license issue really needs to be more clearly defined. |

Hi Eric, so as I understeand it is still as original agreement: You need a full mappoint licence per machine. Correct ?

I didn't mean to confuse you Dazzer - more to point out the the whole thing is confusing. I agree with Eric, as far as I know, there is no run time version of MapPoint 2004. The link above that reference is a Microsoft authored article on how to build a stand-alone install. I assume that means this type of install expects an existing install of MP2004. Depending on the size of your organization volume licensing options do exist. Too bad someone from Microsoft would clear this up for us all. Wishful thinking,

Think of MapPoint as a poor mans MapInfo. You get 90% of the features with 10% of the cost. Google Earth is free initially - you need to pay $20 for GPS Tracking and $400 to do any serious customization. Funny MP is less than $400 but no aerial data (without addons). Microsoft Virtual Earth is free - good detals if you're in America. Otherwise useless. If you just want web access to maps try MapQuest or Yahoo Maps. If you want to make the jump to full web services look at MS Location Server and MS Map Server. All depends on your requirments....
