Mappoint Newbie: Displaying of subsidiaries and descriptions

Hi,

at first I have to confess that I´m a newbie to mappoint and therefore mostly unaware of the data import functions of mappoint.

However, my company bought mappoint and I´m now faced with the following scenario:

A map should be created which displays all our subsidiaries in several countries. For Germany (as example) there would be 30 subsidiaries and 10 local sites for each subsidiary. The data is provided by a single excel-file with all addresses in one sheet - the only separation of the subsidiaries is the varying company name.

The goal is to create a map which displays all subsidiaries / sites grouped by color and, if possible, the name of the subsidiary should be displayed over each push-pin.

Is the above mentioned goal possible with mappoint and how can I achieve it?

So far I have only created a map with all subsidiaries - however, all of them are currently featuring the red color.

I´m grateful for every hint on how to solve this problem.
Thank you in advance
Axel

Re: Mappoint Newbie: Displaying of subsidiaries and descriptions

Could you use the Multi Pushpin option rather than the "regular" pushpin option?
You can then choose the colour of each pin according to a column in the Excel sheet. You could try to use the name field (I'm not quite sure how you have it), or you could add a new column with a number that groups them as required.

Another option would be to put each group into its own spreadsheet and load it separately into its own pushpinset with its own pin.

There's and old, but useful book in the Dummies series - "MapPoint for Dummies". It is old so you should be able to find it very cheap!
It refers to MapPoint 2002, but most is still valid. It would be very good for someone in your position, because it goes through each of the different options showing you the wide range of things that MapPoint can do. Even the experts will probably be surprised
(there's a more modern book in the O'Reilly series but it is for programmers)
