mappoint and SQL

Hi,

I am new to mappoint and this fantastic forum!

I am wanting to link mappoint to a source (probably MSSQL) and enable mappoint be updated possibly every 10 mins to map the postcode. I also wish to publish this update to an intranet site again updated every 10 mins. Is there any way this can be done and if not what would be the best way of doing this.

Hi,

If you want to do it with some custom programming there is no problem at all. You query the database every 10 minutes in your program and feed mappoint with it. Publishing results to a web server can also easy be done in your custom program. Maybe you can do the same writing an add in.

Re: mappoint and SQL

MapPoint's help file is pretty complete and includes quite a few samples and demos.

This site here and MP2KMag.com also have quite a few online articles.

For books, there are two MapPoint books:

"MapPoint For Dummies" is from the dummies series and has a good overview of MapPoint's end-user abilities. However it only gives a taster of MapPoint programming.
(it also uses MapPoint 2002 but most of the book is still valid).

"Programming MapPoint in .NET", O'Reilly, Chandu Thota; is a much more modern and in depth programming book. As the title suggests, it is entirely .NET (and mainly C#). The first section covers desktop MapPoint and shows you how to get around most of the .NET hurdles (eg. getting a .NET assembly to work with MapPoint's COM interface). The middle section covers the MapPoint Webservice. The final (short) section is a quick introduction to Virtual Earth but this is already out of date (Virtual Earth v1 had only just been launched when the book was going to print).
