    Mappoint Vs Mapobject

    Hi Everybody,
Can anybody tell me which one is better (Mappoint or Mapobject)? Or what are the pros and cons of both softwares? I was searching but couldn't find anything that compares these softwares.

    Thanks for the help,

My understanding is that these are two very different platforms for GIS development although there may be some overlap for their potential applications.

I think ESRI's MapObjects is a component or ActiveX control that can be used in a variety of application development environments, but it does not include data as does MapPoint. Nonetheless, I would expect that the GIS analysis capabilities may be stronger.

MapObjects has a much richer suite of functionality then MapPoint, but takes a lot more work to set up, and it is very complicated. (I think there are close to 2000 objects to learn) Unlike MapPoint, it does not come with any maps. Other things to consider, 1) the geocoder is poor and only works with small local datasets not national. This may be adequate if you are only working with a small area like a county. There is also no routing.

The big advantages of MapPoint are the geocoding and routing is for North America/Europe and you get awesome data and it is cheap. The downside is MapPoint can not be extended. It does a few things very well but not do much else.

Another thing to remember, MapObjects is basically an orphaned product. ESRI is moving to ArcObjects. Don't expect much support. If you are looking at MapObjects, you should probably look at alternatives such as MapInfo's MapX and GeoMicro's AltaMap.
