| Microsoft Virtual Earth for Travelers in Houston Just weeks after El Paso launched its Virtual Earth application for visualizing travel conditions in its region, the Houston Transtar consortium--a partnership between the Texas Department of Transportation, Harris County, the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, and the City of Houston--has launched its Houston Transtar Traffic Map. The site allow travelers to check on traffic flow, incidents, lane closures, even providing traffic camera views and the ability to inspect road sign messages. All this data is layered on the Virtual Earth platform, allowing easy access to this information along with rich aerial imagery due to its web service delivery model: citizens only need an Internet-enabled PC with a browser and do not need to install a desktop application. The site has the Virtual Earth 3D enabled and Virtual Earth already features a 3D city model of Houston. You need only click on the 3D button in the upper left control panel, allow the program to install what amounts to a plug-in to manage the 3D experience, and through the site you can explore Houston in 3D.
