    MP 2009: dataset name bug

Was noticed this week by a customer about an application I developed for MP2006, that, after upgrading to MP2009 started to popup random "internal error..." messages.

After investigating, I found that the maximum allowed dataset name (not found it documented anywhere) was reduced from about 100 chars in MP2006 to about 60 chars in MP2009. Because my application name the datasets using a concatenation of 3 strings having 20-40 characters each, the limit of 60 chars can be reached randomly.

Even the Mappoint application dataset name editing behaviour has changed. To reproduce, create a dataset, right click in legend, properties, and try changing the dataset name.
In MP2006, when the 100chars limit is reached, MP beeps and rejects any typing.
In MP2009, when the new reduced limit is reached, nothing happened, it allows you to type hundreds of chars, but when you hit Enter, it comes with a popup requesting you to input a right dataset name, without any detail what's wrong.

    Good finding! Thanks for sharing.

Any theory as to why it would be reduced?

Must be a "feature" to keep developers working and not expendable. The error must have crept in when changing the user interface... guess it might not be such a bad thing they didn't make many changes to the core.
