I'd be interested in seeing your thesis when it's done!

Are you comparing MapPoint 04, or the web service.

The desktop options I would try are:
GeoMicro AltaMap, (both desktop and internet)
ESRI's BusinessMap, and
Calipers Maptitude.

If it is a web service, try:
MapQuest,
GeoMicro,
Where2getit.com
and ESRI.

Another intersting angle is web based solutions that can be sent to the client and hosted themselves. A lot of fortune 500 companies want everything behind their firewall.

Are there any vendors that provide all the above, desktop, internet/intranet, and web service deployment options?

There are some general GIS discussion areas, one you might try is the newsgroup comp.infosystems.gis and also ask there where to ask..

Don't forget MapInfo! http://www.mapinfo.com Out of the bunch listed, MapInfo and ESRI are the big players. MapInfo focuses on business applications of location and ESRI tends to be more in government.
