Performing Forward and Back with MapPoint 2006, 2009, 2010

In versions of MapPoint 2006 and prior, there had been some little-user forward/back buttons to go back to previous views and go forward. They worked fairly analogously to the forward/back buttons in a browser.

While rarely used, they could sometimes be useful in certain scenarios. In particular, when I was mapping several different variables and making screenshots of maps for a particular area, whenever I would import a new dataset, the map would automatically zoom to a "Best View" for the new data, and if I wanted to get a screenshot of exactly the same area as the previous map, it would be nearly impossible and certainly tedious to pan/zoom to get exactly the same map area to appear again in MapPoint without using the Back button.

Presumably after some usability studies and determining users rarely clicked these button and a commendable desire to clean up the interface, Microsoft removed these buttons from MapPoint 2009. In the API, however, methods still existed to move forward/back -- exactly the same functionality, but only exposed in the API for programmers and not in the user interface. Fortunately, Richard Marsden wrote an article for MP2K Magazine entitled
BackAndForwardUtility: A Simple .NET Add-in for Microsoft MapPoint 2009 which exposes these methods in the user interface under the Tools menu.

Understandably, after the release of MapPoint 2009, Microsoft did get feedback from those users who like me would occasionally find the forward/back buttons useful like in the scenario above, and re-added the functionality in the user interface in MapPoint 2010. They achieved a compromise in terms of exposing the forward/back functions for users without cluttering up the user interface, by making them keyboard shortcuts. The shortcuts are the same as is found in browsers, namely Alt-Left and Alt-Right.

Have you tried View Previous? From your expertise I'm guessing your answer isn't that simple but I'll post just in case.

No - you're right, they did put it there in the View Menu along with the short-cut hints.

I see it in MapPoint 2010, not sure if it was there in MapPoint 2009

This is one of those things I was always used to doing, especially after mapping a demographic when the View would always change to somewhere in Washington State, you would have to do a View Back or which was the left arrow button in the toolbars to jump back to the Previous View.

"Going to Washington State" Yup, been there, done that
That's how I knew to look for a hint how to go back to previous view. I've also learned to save a lot and once in awhile under a different name.

    The menu items? Makes sense.

Note that the API calls where still there, I think that's what Richard's simple add-in was using.

Yes, they were in 2006, dropped in 2009, but the menu items only, returned in MapPoint 2010.

The buttons were dropped in 2009 & 2010 to make more room for the larger toolbar buttons.
It is unclear why the menu items were also dropped, but they returned in 2010.
The API methods have always been there (well going back to 2002 at least).
