    Please help!!!! mappoint 2006

    Hi Guys,

I am developing a desktop java application that requires map in the uk.

The place where the system will be running does not have the internet so I need something like mappoint.

    mappoint 2006 will be ok.

    1) Has anyone ran mappoint on linux using something like WINE?
    2) If running on windows has anyone used it within a J2SE application?
    3) Can I install on multiple machines if they will not be used at the same time?

    thanks to anyone who replies!

    Cheers
    Bobby

#2: Yes but you will need a Java COM bridge to do it.
There are a number around including open source implementations. I can't remember which one I used, but if it works for Word/etc then it should be fine for MapPoint.

#3: This is a Microsoft licensing issue, but they'll probably want one license per machine.

I can't remember off hand which bridge it was.

MapPoint is a windows app. Personally I wouldn't even try using it with something like Wine. Although it isn't too weird, you're not going to get any support from Microsoft/etc.

You can take a look at free GIS/mapping software packages on these sites.. my impression is that most of this software is more for scientific endeavors/analysis than powerful, yet easy-to-use, end-user mapping like MapPoint.

    Open Source GIS
    FreeGIS.org

Maybe there's a forum you can find related to those sites where you could ask what package best suits your needs.

However, I have a feeling Wine or VMWare on Linux with a Windows License to run MapPoint is going to be your best bet.

    Hi Eric,

    thanks for the reply.

I have done lots of research and I think mappoint is going to be the best choice.

Have you ever used it on linux?

    Cheers

No I have not.. but I've used VMWare on iMac and it works flawlessly. So if you get VMWare and a Windows license, I'd imagine you would have no problem. Not sure about Wine.
